Facilitated Playgroups

For caregivers and children in the greater Boston area.

What to expect:

Playgroups are facilitated by Understanding the Nature of Childhood founder, Marcia S. Hubelbank, and are a joyful, hands-on approach to furthering one’s understanding of, and connection with, the young child from a Montessori, and other best practices perspective.

Each weekly playgroup lasts 1.5 hrs and includes: arrival routine, open exploration, guided activities, group snack, creative movement, “so-long” routine.

Playgroups can be scheduled as an 8-week series, which begins and ends with a caregiver support session (all caregivers welcome).

Facilitation

Using a community-based approach, playgroups are hosted by local families and include a consistent group of 6 children within a similar age group. The ‘play cohort’ is formed through collaboration with the host family and a facilitator. Playgroups typically last for 8 weeks.

The facilitator will unobtrusively demonstrate and suggest proactive ways to respond to and guide the children’s behavior for a productive outcome, share observations, and address parent questions as they arise.

“Montessori at Home” - All families are welcome to receive a 1.5 hour home visit during the 8 week session.

“The most valuable part of our playgroups was how much I learned from watching [Marcia]. She would take the time to explain how she was setting limits, or what developmental stage was sparking a child's interest in pouring, climbing, twisting tops...It was so nice to have the space to truly observe my child and then follow up my observations with questions and discussion.”
